چکیده

Changes in peroxidase activity was analyzed in developing mustard (Brassica juncea) seed. The activity in soluble and bound fraction was assayed with three hydrogen donors viz. ferulic acid, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid. Growth was measured in terms of dry weight and water content. Seed dry weight data was fitted to a cubic polynomial equation. The rate of dry matter accumulation was calculated by differentiating the best-fit cubic polynomial. A close parallelism between water content and dry matter accumulation was observed in developing mustard seed. The peroxidase activity was less during initial phase of seed development and showed a rising trend after d 20. Thus the activity showed an inverse correlation with water content. This inverse correlation suggests an important role of peroxidase in termination of the process of cell elongation of mustard seed.

Ethylene Production during Development of Mustard (Brassica juncea) and Canola (Brassica napus) Seed.

An open, continuous flow system was used to investigate ethylene production during degreening of maturing seed of mustard (Brassica juncea cv Cutlass and cv Lethbridge 22A) and canola (Brassica napus cv Westar and cv Alto). Isolated mustard seed evolved higher amounts of ethylene than those of canola, and this was particularly evident both early in embryogeny and later during the desiccation ph...

Status of Antioxidant Defence System for Detoxification of Arsenic in Brassica Juncea (l.)

The content of arsenic (As), a naturally occurring toxic element found in soils worldwide, has gone substantially high in agricultural soils due to various anthropogenic activities. The responses of seed germination, seedling growth, photosynthetic pigments and the components of the ascorbateglutathione (AsA-GSH) pathway were analyzed in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] cultivar Pus...

Plant hormone interaction and phenolic metabolism in the regulation of russet spotting in iceberg lettuce.

Russet spotting (RS) is a physiological disorder induced in iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) by exposure to parts per million levels of ethylene at 5 +/- 2 degrees C. Ethylene induced phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and ionically bound peroxidase activities that correlated with development of RS symptoms. The ethylene-treated tissue had significantly higher lignin content than air control tissue...

Cloning of dehydrin coding sequences from Brassica juncea and Brassica napus and their low temperature-inducible expression in germinating seeds.

A novel subclass of dehydrin genes, homologous to the Raphanus sativus late embryogenesis-abundant (LEA) protein (RsLEA2) and the Arabidopsis thaliana dehydrin, was isolated from Brassica juncea and Brassica napus, here designated BjDHN1 and BnDHN1, respectively. The cDNA of BjDHN1 and BnDHN1 genes share 100% nucleotide identity. The encoded protein is predicted to consist of 183 amino acid res...
